Summer AR Assignments
2nd- 3rd grade:
St. Cecilia students entering grades 2nd-3rd have summer reading requirements over the summer.
- Each student will be required to read and AR test on 3 books this summer. The books should fall into your child’s ZPD range. ZPD ranges can be found by logging into the Home Connect website.
- This will be a 15 point grade for the 1st quarter.
- Students may take 3 tests at a time when they come for summer testing, but no more than three tests will be allowed
- Students must make an 80% or above on the book for their test to count. If your child does not make an 80%, please encourage them and have them try a new book.
Optional Summer Reading:
- Students who read and pass 6 (six) AR tests with an 80% or above will also be honored with a special “summer tag” on our very first “Tagged on Tuesday.”
- These books should fall into the student’s reading level (ZPD range).
4th -5th grade:
St. Cecilia students entering grades 4th –5th have a required reading over the summer. After some classroom discussion, an objective test on the required novel will be given within the first few days of school and included in the 1st quarter grading period. Your child’s teacher may also choose to use the novel for additional reading instruction during the first quarter.
- Reading guides will be available for each novel. These guides are optional for completion and are meant to focus on important vocabulary and concepts throughout their reading of each chapter.
Optional Summer Reading:
In addition to the one required novel indicated below, students going to 4th – 5th grade
also have the option of earning an extra Reading grade of either 25/25 or 50/50 by
achieving the set point goal in his/her current ZPD. With only one required novel, we are hoping that all students can take advantage of this extra grade opportunity and strongly encourage them to do so.
- In grades 4th and 5th, the extra grade will be used in the first quarter.
- Students ARE ALLOWED to take AR tests on their required novels over the summer only.
- AR points for the optional additional summer reading and required novel will NOT count toward quarter point goals—only as the “extra grade.”
- Students who earn a 25/25 or 50/50 will also be honored with a special “summer tag” on our very first “Tagged on Tuesday.”
- These books should fall into the student’s reading level (ZPD range).
6th-8th grade:

After classroom discussion, an objective test on the required novel will be given within the first few days of school and included in the 1st quarter grading period. Your child’s teacher may also choose to use the novel for additional reading instruction during the first quarter.
- Reading guides will be available for each novel. These guides are optional for completion and are meant to focus on important vocabulary and concepts throughout their reading of each chapter.
